Dennyloanhead

Falkirk, Mactaggart & Mickel (Homes) Limited

Members of the OPEN team have been leading the masterplanning and landscape appraisal process in relation to this site, located to the west of Dennyloanhead, for a number of years. This work has demonstrated that the original site identified by Falkirk Council could be extended to the west, in order to enable improved access and minimise landscape effects, while also delivering a greater number of units. The Reporter to the Local Plan Inquiry supported the proposed modification and the amended site was subsequently included within the Falkirk Council Local Plan Finalised Draft (Deposit Version) in June 2010.

OPEN were subsequently appointed to lead the preparation of a design led masterplan, to support an outline planning application for residential development, along with all supporting uses and infrastructure, working closely with an extensive multi-disciplinary design team. OPEN were also commissioned to undertake a Landscape Appraisal of the emerging proposals and to manage the preparation of material for an extensive public consultation event.

The Dennyloanhead site is relatively steeply sloping, rising to a prominent ridgeline along its northern edge. The protection of this ridgeline, while developing a well connected and permeable layout that responds to the sloping landform of the site, were among the key challenges and influences on the production of the development framework. The site will also form a new urban to rural transition on the western edge of Dennyloanhead and considerable care was taken in dealing with this relationship. The masterplan was submitted in October 2010 for around 550 residential units and OPEN will continue to be involved in future dialogue between the client, design team and Falkirk Council.
