Total UK Headquarters

Aberdeen, TEPUK / Kier Properties

OPEN was commissioned as part of the successful design team appointed to develop proposals for Total’s new UK Headquarters in Aberdeen. The project is a redevelopment of the existing Total site at Altens, delivering a new headquarters building, sports facilities and associated access and parking within a new landscape setting.

OPEN worked with client representatives and the design team developing landscape proposals as part of a detailed planning application. With concepts based around glacial forms and ice flows, a distinctive approach to the landscape was developed that placed more intimate spaces adjacent to the buildings providing formal entrances and dining terraces. Moving away from the building, wider formal lawns provide a setting for the architecture, with more naturalistic planting at the peripheries of the site contrasting with the formality elsewhere. This includes meadow grass planting and the introduction of native woodland species.

A network of paths allows people the opportunity to explore the site, with different combinations of route varying the length of walk or run. Features within the landscape such as the semi formal pond and opportunities for the placement of sculpture provide a focus for people away from the immediate surroundings of the building.

With planning permission granted, the project was tendered to developer teams. OPEN is now working with Kier Properties who is developing the site, providing TEPUK with the quality headquarters established early in the design process.
