Chengdu, China, Forte
In 2013 OPEN was invited by Forte to take part in a restricted competition to develop concept landscape proposals for the island of Hexindao situated in the city of Chengdu. Chengdu is capital of the Sichuan Province, and is one of the most important economic, transportation and communication centres within Western China.
The island is located within the Jing Jiang River, and is to become a new mixed use quarter as part of the wider development of the city. A commercial / office centre is proposed for the island with prestigious residential areas also included.
OPEN’s proposals drew inspiration from the unique opportunity to develop within the river, considering the island as a jewel within the wider river system. This influenced the proposals for a programmed, contextual Waterfront Park around the perimeter of the island, setting the commercial / office and residential areas of the development. The proposals for the centre of the island include new public plazas, commercial streets and residential gardens. These areas were punctuated with unique canopy structures, providing a unique, distinctive signature element for the island.
