Whitelee Windfarm Extension Phase 3

Whitelee Forest, ScottishPower Renewables

OPEN was commissioned by ScottishPower Renewables (SPR), as part of an environmental team led by Jacobs, to undertake the landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA) for Whitelee Windfarm Extension Phase 3.

Whitelee Windfarm Extension Phase 3 is a proposed extension to the operational Whitelee Windfarm, located on land to the south of Glasgow in the Whitelee Forest. OPEN was responsible for undertaking the layout design and LVIA for the development. Windfarm design software was used to develop layout design concepts for successful integration of the development with the operational Whitelee Windfarm. Extensive consultation with statutory consultees and the public was undertaken. OPEN produced a written landscape and visual impact assessment for inclusion in the Environmental Statement, GIS graphics and photomontage visualisations of the development.

Whitelee Windfarm is the UK's largest onshore windfarm. The windfarm has 215 turbines which can generate 539MW of electricity, enough to power just under 300,000 homes. The windfarm became fully operational in 2009. The windfarm has been carefully planned and designed to work in harmony with the existing environment and is home to a 25 square kilometre area of habitat management, one of the largest in the UK. The windfarm can be accessed and experienced over 130km of recreational trails and there is Visitor Centre which attracts over 120,000 visitors per year.

In August 2012, SPR submitted the application to construct and operate this small extension to Whitelee Windfarm. If consented, the proposals will see a further five turbines added to the existing Whitelee Windfarm, enhancing the generating capacity by up to 12 megawatts. SPR is currently awaiting determination by the Scottish Government following an Appeal.
