Sullom Voe Gas Sweetening Project

Shetland, BP, Genesis Oil and Gas Consultants

A landscape and visual assessment was undertaken by OPEN on behalf of BP, Genesis Oil and Gas Consultants to appraise of the potential impacts of the Sullom Voe Gas Sweetening (SVGS) project on Shetland, Scotland during construction, operation and decommissioning stages.

There was a requirement from Shetland Isles Council to ‘include a description of the landscape character of the area and how that character will be affected by the proposed development. This should include identification of important viewpoints and views from nearby settlements, and assessment of the sensitivity of such views with and without mitigation.’

OPEN’s work included desk analysis and a site visit. This included consideration of the proposed SVGS project on the fabric of the site, on landscape character and views, and on the cumulative effects arising from the proposed SVGS project in conjunction with other development.

The SVGS was situated in a low lying brownfield site, immediately adjacent to existing industrial stacks, flares and buildings. It was noted that these existing elements already had an influence on the landscape character and visual resource. The assessment concluded that the SVGS would appear as only a limited addition to the existing industrial context in views from sensitive receptors and that there would be no significant effects from the introduction of the SVGS.
