Musdale Wind Farm

Loch Awe, Scotland, Infinis

OPEN was commissioned by Infinis to prepare the Landscape and Visual Assessment for Musdale Wind Farm in Argyll and Bute and an application was submitted in July 2013. The proposal comprises 16 turbines each at a blade tip height of 132m with an installed capacity of up to 54 megawatts. Infinis is therefore seeking a Section 36 consent from the Scottish Government.

Musdale is a group of hills in the Craggy Uplands which lie to the west of Loch Awe. There is existing wind farm development in this area with Beinn Ghlas located to the north and Carraig Gheal to the immediate east. The cumulative effect of the proposed Musdale Wind Farm has therefore been a careful consideration throughout the iterative design of the layout, with attempts made to integrate the developments and prevent a spread of visibility into new areas.

The depth of the upland landscape in which the proposed wind farm is situated, combined with its relatively rural and remote character meant that few receptors occurred within the first 5km. The more sensitive receptors across the wider study area were representative of the islands off the west coast, the high tops to the north and the shoreline around the west of Loch Awe. Key viewpoints were used to improve the appearance of the proposed wind farm from these locations and ultimately assess the residual effects. The LVIA found that the development would consolidate the existing wind farm development within this Craggy Upland landscape, where there was sufficient depth to accommodate the additional turbines.

The application has been withdrawn by Infinis.
