Halsary Wind Farm

Caithness, ScottishPower Renewables

Personnel now at OPEN undertook the original 2009 LVIA submitted as part of the Environmental Statement for an 18 turbine wind farm proposal. The site is located near Spittal and on the opposite side of the A9 from the existing Causeymire Wind Farm. The proposal involves the removal of existing coniferous forestry from the site and its restoration to peatland habitat.

Key considerations for the original assessment were the design relationship with the existing Causeymire Wind Farm and the views from the A9 and the settlement of Spittal as well as other residential receptors.

Following consultation in 2012 OPEN, prepared an Addendum to the landscape and visual assessment to take account of reduced turbine numbers and the revised Highland Council visualisation standards. This 15 turbine wind farm was approved by The Highland Council in 2013.

SPR subsequently submitted a Section 42 Application to increase the height of the consented turbines by 12m to 112m to tip, which accords with the consented, nearby Bad a Cheo Wind Farm. The increased height of the Halsary Wind Farm turbines was consented in August 2015.
