Darwin Centre

Edinburgh, University of Edinburgh

OPEN is currently preparing a Landscape and Visual Appraisal (LVA), in support of The University of Edinburgh’s proposed redevelopment of the Darwin Centre and associated facilities at its Kings Buildings Campus, Edinburgh. As part of Edinburgh University’s strategic masterplan for the Campus, plans are proposed to redevelop the Darwin Centre; an existing building on the campus, designed for biological research. The redevelopment comprises constructing an additional layer of glazing to the existing building, which increases the dimensions of the building incrementally. OPEN undertook a landscape and visual appraisal (LVA), which reviewed the baseline characteristics of the site and evaluated how the proposed development would change the character and visual amenity of the area, and specifically to analyse how the special qualities of the Edinburgh skyline could be affected by the proposed development.
