Thomas James

Lanscape Assistant

Raised in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Tom moved to Edinburgh in 2011 for university. Upon completion of his studies, he graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a masters degree in landscape architecture. During the five-year course, he gained experience in an array of activities within the discipline.

Enjoying the design of experiential landscapes, Tom believes that landscape architecture provides the unique opportunity to design in tandem with natural processes and human uses.

Being involved in collaborative design competitions, engagement workshops and gaining over a year’s work experience, he was able to develop a broad skill base whilst at university. His practical approach to his studies resulted in his final year project, based in Krakow, being displayed in a city-wide exhibition.

Following his graduation, Tom joined the team at OPEN in May 2016. Currently working on a variety of jobs, he is contributing to the multi-disciplinary philosophy with which OPEN approach their projects. He is working towards sitting his Chartership exam by gaining experience through assisting on a range of project types, which span all stages of the design process. This work ranges from concept development, tendering works and practical completion.
