Simon Martin

Simon Martin is a chartered Landscape Architect and Associate of OPEN, who specialises in landscape planning and landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA).

Simon has 17 years professional landscape planning and design consultancy experience, during which time he has been involved in a wide range of landscape planning and EIA projects, particularly focusing on the planning and assessment of large scale development proposals, such as renewable energy developments, energy infrastructure, residential and urban regeneration projects.

Simon’s work at OPEN varies from the early stages of development feasibility, determination of landscape capacity for future development, LVIA/EIA and productions for planning inquiries.

Simon has developed particular technical expertise in LVIA and its related fields, SLVIA (seascape assessment) and TVIA (townscape assessment), gained through the delivery of assessments for a range of development projects. Since being part of the environmental team for several of the first major windfarm projects in Scotland, Simon has gone on to undertake LVIAs for numerous onshore windfarm proposals throughout Scotland, particularly in Ayrshire, Dumfries & Galloway and Aberdeenshire. His interest and specialism in renewable energy continues and he has fulfilled a key role in the consent and delivery of many successful projects, including some of the largest operational windfarms in UK.

Recently Simon’s project work has focused particularly on offshore windfarm SLVIA, while leading OPEN’s assessments of two nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIP) in south-east England, as well as the delivery of landscape related consent conditions for the onshore infrastructure required for East Anglia ONE Offshore Windfarm and Moray East Offshore Windfarm. Simon also has an active role at OPEN in undertaking townscape assessments and producing illustrative visual appraisals of residential and urban redevelopment projects.
