Following a diploma in Art and Design at Loughborough University, Iain undertook the first stage of his architectural education at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in Aberdeen. He then embarked on a professional placement at Peck von Hartel in Melbourne working on some large scale commercial and cultural projects before returning to Scotland to complete his honours degree and Diploma in Architecture and Urbanism at Edinburgh College of Art. After graduating, Iain joined a small team at Morgan McDonnell Architecture where he played a key role on a range of projects, most notably the multi-award winning mixed use Advocates Close development in a sensitive site in Edinburgh’s old town. Using this experience, Iain then went on to join Cadell2 in Linlithgow to lead the refurbishment of a large 16th century merchants house with new build elements, whilst also playing an active role in the development of some major masterplan projects.

Relocating to London, Iain undertook a position at John McAslan and Partners, where he gained valuable experience in major international projects including; Doha Cultural Forum, Msheireb Academy (Doha) and Kericho Cathedral, Kenya, and was part of the small team responsible for winning an invited competition to deliver the Jumma Daily Mosque in Doha.

During a period of running his own small practise, Iain received an award from the RSA and co-founded cross disciplinary arts residency project ‘The Bothy Project’ undertaking the role of director and architect, delivering a network of small scale live/work structures throughout rural Scotland. Immediately prior to joining OPEN, Iain worked with Douglas Flett Architects, where he enjoyed working on multiple projects concurrently in a project leading role within the practise. Key relevant experience at DFA includes managing the upgrade of a large portfolio of properties for a leading international developer, consolidation of university campus facilities, and numerous contemporary one-off projects.

Having gained wide ranging experience at some respected practices in Melbourne, Edinburgh, and London, Iain has enjoyed working on a range of prestigious projects, at all scales, across a wide spectrum of sectors. As a result, Iain has developed broad knowledge, a wide span of skillsets and good management ability, all of which he recognises are equally integral to the procurement and delivery of good architecture.
