Douglas Flett

Principal Architect

Dougie studied at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in Aberdeen where he won the Civic Medal in his degree year and earned a distinction in his post-graduate Diploma.

Joining Comprehensive Design Architects in 1993 he worked through the ranks building up an in-depth knowledge of design and procurement across a wide variety of sectors. From 2001 to 2009 he held the position of associate, leading both internally and across wider design teams in the delivery of major, complex projects including bespoke corporate headquarters, mixed use regeneration developments and high quality residential schemes. Strategy development, management and communication are particular strengths.

Prior to working with OPEN Dougie led his own practice for 7 years where he had opportunities to apply his skills and approach to a rich and diverse range of projects including visitors’ centres, one-off houses, flatted developments and college campuses. This period included regular collaborations with his now colleagues at OPEN from which emerged a shared set of aspirations and values.

Now leading the architectural team within OPEN, Dougie is passionate about good design and the positive impact it can have on peoples’ lives, whether it be urban planning on a grand scale or a single detail within a new building. He is, however, also keenly aware of the fundamental importance of successful delivery, meeting clients’ expectations in terms of budget, programme and quality. Good architecture should address all of these aspirations, and be beautiful and practical.
